Sullivan County in the Revolution: Traveling Exhibit
250th Anniversary of Revolutionary War
This year’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is a
huge anniversary for our country, but there are other upcoming anniversaries of events
which happened right here in Sullivan County during the American Revolution – the
battle of Chestnut Woods in 1778 and the Battle of Minisink in 1779.
NEW! Traveling Exhibit
Created especially for schools, this traveling exhibition has fun and engaging activities, visuals and informative text relating directly to Sullivan County.
It includes 12 eye- catching panels with information on the Sullivan County battles of Minisink and Chestnut Woods, Loyalists, Patriots, the County’s early beginnings and evolution,
General John Sullivan, difficulties of settler life and more.
These panels have matching
games, questions and even a code deciphering activity using a copy of the actual 1779
Culper Code Book.
Important Information
Along with the panels there is a table with reproduction Revolutionary War items such
as hats, clothing, canteen, haversack and cartridge box; books, and a video on the song “Yankee Doodle” explaining the meanings behind the song’s words.
Accompanying the exhibition is a comprehensive Teacher’s Guide designed by our
Museum Educator Debbie Scanlon, to help teachers thoroughly engage their students
with the exhibition. It includes more in depth information, activities and worksheets,
all downloadable from our website.
The traveling exhibition is available to all schools, libraries and other public venues
FREE upon request, on a first come first served basis, for up to 2 weeks. It is designed
for easy set up and take down and needs minimal space – a large hallway or vestibule
area can be used.
Complete instructions are included and help supplied if necessary.
